Market Drayton

Chronicle Cup win

Phil James turn in a great performance at Shrewsbury Golf Club on Saturday (August 18) to win the Chronicle Cup.

Playing off 17, Phil scored 41 points beating his nearest rival by a clear four points in this prestigious event that is one of the highlights of the SHUGC competitive calendar.

His win came despite a poor start returning double bogeys on the first three holes. He steadied his game with a birdie on the eighth before scoring 23 points on the back nine.

Phil qualified back in April in the Harry Lane Trophy and Chronicle Cup qualifying event at Market Drayton where the top four players with handicaps of 10 to 24 are eligible to play

The team competition was extremely close and Phil, together with Micky Benting, Steve Fulcher and Kevin Talbot, came 9th with 92 points only four behind the winning team from Shrewsbury who clearly benefited from their home advantage.

The event attracted 92 entrants playing in 23 teams.
